What is intensive therapy?

Intensive therapy is designed to help clients who want to go deeper and see results more quickly than traditional talk therapy sessions may allow. Instead of meeting weekly for 45-60 minutes, you and your therapist will meet for a longer amount of time, typically ranging from 3 to 9 hours over the course of 1-3 days, for deep therapeutic work.

I like to think of online intensives as a virtual therapy retreat! Prior to the intensive, we will meet for a 90-minute pre-intensive interview to discuss your goals and develop a treatment plan. We will review your current supports, resources & coping skills and identify the areas you would like to see change, relief or growth. We will then meet for an agreed-upon amount of time for the intensive, which typically ranges from 3-9 hours over the course of 1-3 days depending on the complexity of the issue to be addressed. In these, we will either do EMDR or solution-focused therapy, or a combination of both, depending on the issue and treatment needs. Finally, we will meet for a post-intensive interview to debrief, discuss insights and takeaways, and identify next steps for continued healing. You'll receive a workbook to use throughout the process - to deepen self-learning, to apply during the intensive and to take notes.

Therapy intensives are more effective & efficient than normal 45-minute sessions. Typically, in 45-minute sessions, there’s at least 5-10 minutes of ‘check-in’ at the start &, usually, 5-10 minutes of ‘check-out’ at the end. This leaves only 25-35 minutes for deep therapeutic work. A 3-hour therapy intensive allows for 2.5 hours of depth work. If you opt for the 3-day option, that’s the equivalent of doing 12 therapy sessions, or 3 months worth of therapy, in just a few days!

Yes, our therapists are trained with tools and interventions to perform EMDR virtually. However, we recommend that you are in a safe, private space with a strong & secure internet connection while doing so.

This depends on your goals for the intensive. Some issues can be addressed in just 1 day. Others, particularly those that are more complex, may take more time and require 2-3 days. I can help you make a determination about the number of days that would work best based on your goals.

No, unfortunately insurance does not cover the cost of intensives.

The cost of an online therapeutic intensive ranges greatly based on the number of hours. There are several packages to choose from based on your needs.

The short answer is yes. However I recommend that the issue you bring into the intensive be something separate that you will not also be discussing with your other therapist during our work together, as this can disrupt the processing and be less effective. I will also consult with your therapist to obtain any pertinent info that may be useful to our work.

Therapy intensives give you the results you would get from months of therapy in a much shorter period of time. If you add up the cost of weekly therapy, an intensive is actually more cost effective. Instead of waiting months, you can get the same results in a few days, which is hard to put a price tag on!
